COESISTENZA E ACCULTURAZIONE NELLA SICILIA NORMANNO-SVEVA TRA MITO E REALTÀ STORICA

ABSTRACT. Coexistence and acculturation in Norman-Swabian Sicily between myth and historical evidence. This essay starts looking on two livelong cultural heritage usually believed by common people, especially in Sicily and Italy. The first one founding the present sicilian identity on mythic arabic roots; the second one depicting Norman-Swabian Sicily as a paradise of tolerance and balanced acculturation between Arabs, Greeks, Normans and Italians. Historical evidences are more articulated and problematic: afterwards a first not problematic period, that corresponds to the norman conquest of Sicily and to the whole reign of Roger II, takeovers an increasingly conflictual period closed by the eradication of the last muslim sicilians from the isle, during the kingdom of the Emperor Frederick II. The essay analizes causes and phases of this destructive socio-cultural evolution.
